The city has 400 hundred years of history. It was founded on the River Musi five miles east of Golconda, the capital of Qutb Shahi kingdom, in 1591-92 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. There are different stories on as to how the city came into existence. One of them is that in 16th century it was built to accommodate the surplus population of Golconda. Slowly several buildings came up along the River Musi giving a shape to the city of Hyderabad. Golconda was one of the leading markets for diamonds, pearls, steel for arms, and also printed fabric at that time.
Situated at an altitude of 536 meters from the sea level the weather in the city is normally pleasant. The summers are hot with the mercury soaring to as high as 45 degree Celsius. The city is famous for its pearls and is often referred to as the Pearl City. It is also famous for bangles and its Mughalai cuisines. The historical monuments Charminar, Golconda fort, Qutubshahi tombs, Mecca Masjid and the falaknuma palace make it a place worth visiting.
