A given business process is not always a unique or new process. The uniqueness stems from the fact that the size of operations this process is trying to address varies. This variation cannot be addressed through the Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) solutions. The depth of the process, players, concurrency, exceptions are some of the factors that need to be accommodated as part of a custom solution and all these factors are intricately tied to the size of the business. Some of the conditioning factors that trigger ideas are comprehensive understanding, exposure and familiarity with a given domain or market, visible un addressed gaps or lacunae in a business or idea. An idea in itself is not self contained and needs an enabler in terms of processes, fulfillment and technology.
Another need that requires a custom build approach is the need for increasing efficiency, process honing, control and monitoring. This need becomes a reality when businesses expand and diversify. In these scenarios target audiences change, expectations go up and efficiency is not an option. This scenario requires a new set of business processes which are correctly measurable in terms of accountability, accuracy and efficiency.
